CONTEMPORARY ENSEMBLE LABORATORY

Course for the 3rd and 4th year students of the Composition Department of the Conservatory

The Laboratory of Contemporary Ensemble is a major discipline in the training of students in the Art of Composition, in the aspect of its practicality and preparation for artistic, creative and pedagogical activities in higher education. The course is initiated by the Department of Contemporary Music of the Moscow Conservatory with the participation of the Studio for New Music ensemble.

The course explores extended instrumental playing techniques, peculiarities of the work on the composition with live-electronic and tape, problems of notation and interpretation of author's notations. In addition, issues of intrumental thinking in contemporary music are discussed, as well as the author - performer - listener relationship.

The course concludes with a session in open rehearsal format, where soloists of the Studio for New Music ensemble plays and comments on three-minute sketches of works written by the students.
